If a new employer, licensing board, or volunteer organization has asked you for a BCI background check, you may be wondering what that actually means. In Ohio, BCI stands for the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, a division of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. A BCI check is a fingerprint based search of Ohio criminal history records, and it is one of the most common requirements for jobs and licenses throughout the state.
How a BCI Check Works
Unlike a simple name search on the internet, a BCI background check is tied to your fingerprints. Your prints are captured electronically through the Ohio WebCheck system and transmitted to BCI. Because fingerprints are unique, the search is far more reliable than a name and birth date search, which can produce false matches or miss records filed under a different spelling.
Once BCI processes the request, the results are delivered according to the instructions attached to your submission. In many cases the results go directly to the employer or agency that requested them rather than to the applicant.
Who Typically Needs a BCI Check
Ohio law and many licensing boards require fingerprint background checks for people who work with vulnerable populations or hold positions of trust. Common examples include:
- Teachers, substitute teachers, coaches, and other school employees
- Nurses, home health aides, and other healthcare workers
- Childcare providers and daycare staff
- Real estate and insurance license applicants
- Employees of agencies serving older adults or people with disabilities
- Volunteers who work with children
- Applicants for certain professional and occupational licenses
Your employer or licensing board will tell you which check is required and which reason code or Ohio Revised Code section applies. Having that information before your appointment prevents delays.
BCI Only or BCI and FBI
Some positions require only a BCI check, which covers Ohio records. Others also require an FBI check, which searches national records. If you have lived outside Ohio in recent years, many employers will ask for both. When in doubt, ask the requesting agency in writing so you order the correct check the first time.
Why Accuracy Matters
A background check submitted under the wrong reason code or sent to the wrong recipient may have to be redone, which costs you time and money. A professional fingerprinting provider will review your paperwork, confirm the required codes, and make sure your prints are captured clearly so they are not rejected for poor quality.
