When a new job or license depends on your background check, waiting for results can feel stressful. One of the most common questions we hear is how long BCI and FBI results take. The honest answer is that it depends, but understanding what affects processing time can help you plan ahead and avoid surprises.
Electronic Submissions Are Faster
Fingerprints captured electronically through Ohio WebCheck are transmitted directly to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. This is much faster than the old process of rolling ink cards and mailing them. For many applicants, electronic submission cuts processing time significantly.
BCI Results
BCI checks search Ohio criminal history records. When fingerprints are clear and there are no records requiring additional review, BCI results are often returned within a few business days. Processing times can change based on volume, staffing, and time of year, so treat any estimate as a general guide rather than a guarantee.
FBI Results
FBI checks search national records and pass through BCI before reaching the FBI. Because of that extra step, FBI results commonly take somewhat longer than BCI results. If your employer requires both checks, the FBI result is often the one that determines when your file is complete.
What Can Slow Things Down
Several factors can extend processing time:
- Fingerprints rejected for poor image quality
- Errors in name, date of birth, or other personal information
- An incorrect reason code or recipient
- Records that require manual review
- High seasonal volume, such as the weeks before a school year begins
A rejected print is especially frustrating because it often means returning to be fingerprinted again. Working with an experienced technician who checks image quality before submission helps reduce that risk.
Where Do Results Go
In many cases results are sent directly to the employer, licensing board, or agency that requested them. Applicants do not always receive a copy. If you are waiting on results, contact the requesting organization first, since they are usually the ones who receive them. Keep your receipt or transaction information handy in case they need to look it up.
How to Plan Ahead
- Get fingerprinted as soon as you know a check is required
- Confirm your reason code and recipient before your appointment
- Ask your employer whether you can begin any onboarding steps while you wait
- Avoid waiting until the last week before a deadline
- Keep your receipt until your employer confirms results were received
Seasonal Rushes
Late summer is typically busy as teachers, coaches, and school staff prepare for the new year. Licensing deadlines can also create rushes. If your timeline is tight, schedule early in the season.
