Few things are more frustrating than arriving for a fingerprinting appointment only to learn that you are missing something important. A little preparation saves time and helps make sure your background check is processed correctly the first time. Use this checklist before your visit.

A Valid Photo ID

You must present a valid, unexpired government issued photo ID. Commonly accepted forms include:

  • A state driver’s license
  • A state identification card
  • A United States passport
  • A military identification card

Make sure the name on your ID matches the name your employer or licensing board has on file. If your name has recently changed, bring documentation and ask the requesting agency how they want your name submitted.

Your Reason Code

Every Ohio WebCheck submission requires a reason for the check, often expressed as an Ohio Revised Code section or reason code. This tells BCI why the check is being performed and determines which records are searched and who may receive the results. Your employer, school, or licensing board should provide this. If they have not, ask them before your appointment.

Recipient Information

Some checks are sent directly to an employer or agency. You may need the agency’s name, address, or other identifying information so the results are routed correctly. Bring any letter, email, or form the requesting organization gave you.

Know Which Checks You Need

Confirm whether you need a BCI check, an FBI check, or both. Ordering the wrong check is one of the most common and costly mistakes applicants make.

Payment

Fees vary depending on whether you need a BCI check, an FBI check, or both. Some employers pay for the check directly or provide billing information, so ask whether your fees are covered before you pay out of pocket.

Prepare Your Hands

Clear fingerprint images are essential. To help:

  • Wash your hands before your appointment
  • Avoid heavy lotions or oils on the day of your visit
  • Stay hydrated in the days before your appointment
  • Moisturize the night before if your skin tends to be very dry
  • Remove rings or bracelets that may get in the way

Allow Enough Time

Most appointments are quick, but plan for extra time if you have worn or faint fingerprints. The technician may need several attempts to capture acceptable images.

Questions to Ask Before You Arrive

If anything is unclear, contact your employer or licensing board in advance. Ask about deadlines, whether results go directly to them, and whether they need a copy of your receipt.
