If you have never been fingerprinted for a background check, the process can feel unfamiliar. The good news is that Ohio WebCheck makes it fast, accurate, and simple. Here is a step by step look at what happens from the moment you learn you need a background check to the moment your results are delivered.

Step One: Get Your Requirements

Before you book an appointment, contact the employer, school, or licensing board that requested your check. Ask which checks you need, BCI, FBI, or both, and ask for the reason code or Ohio Revised Code section that applies. Also confirm where the results should be sent. These details guide the entire submission.

Step Two: Gather Your Documents

Bring a valid, unexpired government issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, state ID card, or passport. Bring any paperwork your employer provided, including agency names, addresses, or account information. Having everything in hand prevents delays at the counter.

Step Three: Data Entry

At the appointment, the fingerprinting technician enters your personal information into the WebCheck system. This includes your name, date of birth, and other identifying details, along with the reason code and recipient information. Take a moment to review the information for accuracy. A simple typo can cause problems later.

Step Four: Capturing Your Fingerprints

WebCheck uses electronic scanners rather than ink. The technician will guide each finger onto the scanner, capturing rolled impressions of each finger and flat impressions of your hands. The system checks image quality as it goes. If a print is unclear, the technician will retake it. The process usually takes only a few minutes.

Step Five: Electronic Submission

Once your prints and information are complete, the submission is sent electronically to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. If an FBI check is included, BCI forwards the request to the FBI for a national search. You will typically receive a receipt or transaction record. Keep it in case you need to follow up.

Step Six: Results

Processing times vary, but electronic submissions are generally much faster than mailed ink cards. Results are delivered according to the instructions on your submission. In many cases the employer or agency receives them directly. If you are unsure whether your results arrived, contact the requesting agency first, and keep your receipt available.

Tips for a Smooth Appointment

  • Wash your hands before your appointment and avoid heavy lotion that day
  • Remove rings if possible, since they can get in the way of good prints
  • Arrive with your reason code already confirmed
  • Allow extra time if you have very dry skin or worn fingerprints
